NextEra Energy and Dominion Energy Announce Virginia Benefits Package

This post is shared for informational purposes only. It does not represent an endorsement of or opposition to the proposed combination between NextEra Energy and Dominion Energy. The campaign is sharing this summary because the proposal directly affects Harrisonburg residents as Dominion Energy customers. Residents are encouraged to review the source materials and follow the State Corporation Commission's public proceedings.

On September 14, 2026, NextEra Energy and Dominion Energy announced an expanded Virginia benefits package as part of their proposed combination. The package is subject to regulatory review and has not yet been approved.

What the companies announced

The companies outlined several commitments directed at Virginia residents and businesses:

  • Residential bill relief: Four years of $10-per-month bill credits for residential customers — double the two years previously proposed — with low-income assistance expanded through an additional $100 million increase to EnergyShare, Dominion Energy's shareholder-funded bill assistance program, through 2038.
  • Customer cost protection: The companies stated customers will not pay for merger costs, and reaffirmed support for efforts by the State Corporation Commission, the General Assembly, and the Governor to protect residential and small business customers from costs associated with serving data centers.
  • Clean energy acceleration: The package would accelerate solar, battery storage, and other clean energy resources in Virginia in accordance with the Virginia Clean Economy Act, and reduce reliance on expensive imported power.
  • Jobs and economic investment: 1,000 new direct jobs in Virginia, a $100 million workforce development fund, and up to a $1 billion annual, five-year Virginia Supplier Program. A new shareholder-funded NextEra Energy office tower would be built in Richmond beside the existing Dominion Energy headquarters.
  • Keeping Dominion Energy Virginia local: Dominion Energy Virginia would retain its name, local leadership, and accountability to the State Corporation Commission.

Why this matters for Harrisonburg

Harrisonburg residents are Dominion Energy customers. Decisions made at the state level about energy rates, clean energy investment, and utility oversight have direct consequences for household budgets and the public institutions that serve our community.

The proposed combination remains subject to required regulatory approvals, including review by the State Corporation Commission. The companies expect the transaction to close in the second half of 2027 if approved.
